West Yorkshire Places
Project overview
The West Yorkshire Places project aims to help create safer, healthier and better- connected streets in identified areas within Bradford, Cornholme (Calderdale), Kirklees and Wakefield.
The project aims to deliver active travel (walking, cycling and wheeling) and public realm improvements (improving our communal public space) in four of the five West Yorkshire local authority areas (apart from Leeds, where a similar project, Healthier Streets, is already underway in Armley Town Street and Barwick Road,
Manston And The Poole Estate).
Each scheme that is out for engagement have unique features and approaches, as each local authority area is shaping their scheme according to local needs. The selected areas have been identified as locations with a high risk of road traffic collisions and have a major or main road running through that can be difficult to cross safely or makes it difficult to get where you're going.
West Yorkshire Combined Authority, in partnership with each local council, will be seeking feedback on our proposals from residents, business owners and those that frequent the scheme area. We will use this feedback to inform development of our detailed plans.

Project aims
The streets across West Yorkshire can be dominated by motor traffic and walking, wheeling or cycling environments have often been poorly maintained. When streets feel unwelcoming or unsafe it can prevent people from socialising, children from playing outside, and discourage walking, cycling or wheeling in your areas. We know that this can lead to you feeling negatively about your area. By improving the local environment, we can encourage people to get out and use your neighbourhoods once again.
The overall aims of the project are to:
Improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and most at risk road users, particularly women and girls.
Encourage walking and cycling and improve accessibility to public transport
Reduce transport related carbon emissions and improve air quality
Improve public spaces and support local economic activity
