About the scheme

The West Yorkshire Places project aims to help create safer, healthier and better-connected streets in the Bradford Moor area.

Speeding traffic and inconsiderate parking through the Bradford Moor neighbourhood can make residents and those passing through the area feel unsafe to walk, cycle and wheel (by wheeling we mean scooters, wheelchairs, mobility aids and people with pushchairs). Lack of safe infrastructure is discouraging people from using these methods even to make short journeys which in turn is increasing car use and air pollution in an already busy, congested area.

This scheme aims to establish an area where people are encouraged to walk, cycle and wheel by making the area feel safer and more welcoming to residents. Some of the measures below would address this through improving existing walking and cycling infrastructure as well as slowing existing traffic down to safer speeds.

What sort of improvements could be made?

The measures listed below and shown on the map are to give you an idea of what could potentially be implemented. Your feedback will be used to inform which of these measures are a priority to put in place and which location would make the most positive impact. There is also an opportunity for you to tell us any additional improvements you think should be in place that we’ve not mentioned.

Note: some measures may not implemented due to funding constraints.

Our proposals contain:

  • New pedestrian-controlled crossings, where people waiting to cross can press a button and wait for the traffic to stop as directed by traffic lights

  • Uncontrolled crossings which generally take the form of pedestrian islands and dropped kerbs

  • Traffic calming measures like speed bumps

  • Walking environment improvements such as more walking route signs around the area

  • An art trail, which is a walking route with dropped kerbs and parking adjustments to make the route clear and accessible. Also, introducing some colourful lines and shapes on the path, as well as art throughout to make the route more fun.

  • One-way systems. Whilst no roads have been confirmed yet, your input will help inform if this is implemented and where.

  • Restricting access to certain roads by type of transport. All vehicles can still enter the street and all people who live there can still access their homes, but only people who are walking and cycling can go all the way along the street. Whilst no roads have been confirmed yet, your input will help inform if this is implemented and where.

  • Measures to make crossing side roads easier for pedestrians. This could be through raising the road height or reducing the width or the entrance to the road. Whilst no roads have been confirmed yet your input will help inform if this is implemented and where.

This engagement will close at 11.59pm on 30 April 2025.

Funding

The expected cost of this scheme is currently £540,000. Subject to a successful business case approval by the Combined Authority, costs would be funded by City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS).

West Yorkshire Combined Authority has been allocated £830 million from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), which is aimed at providing an integrated and inclusive transport network and was made possible thanks to the West Yorkshire Mayoral devolution deal. This work will build on the significant investment already being made in making it easier for people to walk, cycle and use public transport around West Yorkshire.
