Cleckheaton Greenway Connection
1 April 2025 – 13 May 2025
About the scheme
The West Yorkshire Places project aims to help create safer, healthier and better connected streets in Cleckheaton.
We want to improve connections between Spen Valley Greenway and Cleckheaton town centre. This will provide a new, accessible access to Cleckheaton for pedestrians and cyclists, helping to drive footfall and support local businesses. We want to implement traffic calming measures and new crossing points to make road travel near the Greenway safer. We also want to make things safer for people walking and cycling, by removing parking in the underpass and improving lighting.
The scheme is part of Kirklees Council’s wider Cleckheaton Blueprint(External link).
What sort of improvements could be made?
Our proposals contain:
Widening of the footway into Cross Crown Street and creating a new zebra crossing leading to Station Approach
Improve accessibility for cycling and wheeling between Railway St and Northgate using a modal filter and dropped kerbs.
Widening the footway under the bridge on Station Approach and restricting some parking.
Painting, installing new lighting and repairing the road surface under the bridge
New zebra crossing at the junction of Northgate and Cheapside. Disabled parking will be relocated nearby to accommodate the zebra crossing
Connect the greenway to Crown Street with a new accessible ramp
Convert a section of Crown Street car park into a mini park with seating, landscaping, events space and cycle parking
Tidy up and seating on the Greenway
New uncontrolled crossing over Station Approach to the proposed new green space within Crown Street car park
Improved walking, cycling and wheeling route signs
Prohibiting a left turn from Crown Street into Cross Crown Street
An improved crossing point on Toffs Road
New 20mph speed limit
Traffic calming

Next steps
Feedback gathered from the public consultations will be considered and will inform the development of more detailed proposals. An engagement outcome report summarising the feedback will then be added to this webpage.
This engagement will close at 11.59pm on 13 May 2025.
Funding
The indicative allocation for this scheme is currently £900,000. Subject to a successful business case approval by the Combined Authority, costs would be funded by City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS).
West Yorkshire Combined Authority has been allocated £830 million from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), which is aimed at providing an integrated and inclusive transport network and was made possible thanks to the West Yorkshire Mayoral devolution deal. This work will build on the significant investment already being made in making it easier for people to walk, cycle and use public transport around West Yorkshire.
Brunswick Street
The Brunswick Street Footway scheme is the second scheme within the Kirklees district which is looking to improve an existing path for walking, wheeling and cycling near Huddersfield railway station. A public consultation has already been held when the project was previously part of the Huddersfield Rail Station Connections project, therefore no further engagement is being undertaken at this time.
