FAQs
General Questions
What are the aims of the Kings Road Connect scheme?
The scheme aims to improve the public transport experience for everyone, and create a better route for walking, wheeling, and cycling along the route between Five Lane Ends roundabout, Kings Road, and Canal Road. Collectively, our plans will reconnect a large section of the population with travel options that work for them. For others, we’ll make it more convenient and attractive to use these ways to travel and use their car less if they choose to.
Why is this project being undertaken?
Kings Road is part of one of the key routes in and out of Bradford. Every day around 14,000 vehicles use the route, causing congestion and delays at peak times. Public transport struggles to offer a reliable service that works for people in their everyday lives. Facilities for walking, wheeling, and cycling are also poor. This makes the route difficult to use for many, with local people hit the hardest.
Around one in three households along the route don’t own a vehicle. Young people are reliant on bus services. This makes it harder for people to access jobs, get to school or college, and attend appointments on time. Visiting family and friends can also be challenging. We need to change this.
Who is responsible for this project?
The project is being managed by Bradford Council in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and in collaboration with various stakeholders, including transport bodies and community groups.
What area does the scheme cover?
The Kings Road Connect scheme covers the route between Morrisons roundabout at the Enterprise 5 Retail Park along Bradford Road, Swain House Road, and Kings Road onto the A6037 Canal Road south as far as the junction of the A6181/A650. It runs though the Five Lane Ends, Wrose, Swain House, and Ashbourne neighbourhoods in northeast Bradford.
How is the scheme funded?
The scheme is to be funded through the £5.7 billion City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) national funding pot, which represents an unprecedented government investment into local transport networks.
£830 million has been allocated to West Yorkshire for funding over 40 projects to be delivered between 2022 and 2027. The Bradford district will receive funding from this pot for various transport projects aimed at enhancing the district’s infrastructure and supporting sustainable transport initiatives, including covering the £35 million expected cost of the Kings Road project.
Is the Bradford Shipley Route Improvement Scheme connected to this project?
hese proposals fall under a different scheme. We consulted on this scheme in late 2024 and we received over 1,300 responses. We are currently analysing all of the feedback we received during the consultation so we can produce a consultation report, which will help us to determine the next steps for that project. The consultation report is currently expected to be shared in early 2025. If you have any questions about the Bradford Shipley Route Improvement Scheme, you can get in touch with the YourVoice team at: yourvoice@westyorks-ca.gov.uk or call the MetroLine at 0113 245 7676.
Impact on Transport
What changes will be made for pedestrians?
Pedestrians will benefit from improved pavements, new crossing points, and safer walking routes throughout the corridor. We are working with residents, businesses, and mobility groups to finalise the details of the plans to improve pedestrian access.
How will bus services be affected?
The project will look to introduce new bus lanes and priority at junctions to make bus travel faster and more reliable. Bus stops will also be upgraded with better shelters, seating, real-time information, and clear signage. We are working with bus providers to finalise the details of the scheme and the impact on bus services which will be communicated as the works progress.
What improvements will be made for cyclists?
The plans include the creation of dedicated and safe cycle lanes along the corridor to encourage more people to cycle. We are working with cycling groups to finalise the details of the scheme and welcome feedback from the public on how they would like to see provision for cyclists improved.
What impact will there be on car users?
The scheme is expected to have minimal impact on car users. Overall, the project aims to improve transport options for all, making travel more convenient for everyone. Additionally, we will make the route safer for all roads users, including drivers, cyclists and pedestrians by creating segregated cycle lanes and upgrading footways, crossings and bus stops along the whole route.
What impact will there be on parking?
We are proposing to introduce formalised parking laybys on some sections of the route which will help to prioritise resident parking, reduce street clutter and help traffic flow more smoothly.
Safety and Accessibility
How will road safety be improved?
We are looking at opportunities to reduce speed limits and implement better traffic management to enhance road safety for all users. The final plans are in development, and we welcome feedback from the local community on the planned measures and how these can be improved.
Which roads will have a reduced speed limit?
The section of Kings Road between the Flower Bank and Brisbane Avenue junctions will have its speed limit reduced from 40mph to 30mph. This is consistent with the rest of Kings Road and will improve road safety for all users and ensure smoother journeys.
Will the project be accessible for people with disabilities?
Yes, the project aims to improve accessibility for everyone, including those using mobility aids and wheelchairs. At each stage of the planning and design process we have consulted with disability groups, and we will continue to incorporate their feedback as detail design work continues.
Environmental Impact
How will the project help the environment?
By making it safer, easier and more attractive for more people to walk, cycle, and use buses instead of driving, the project aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve local air quality.
What are you doing to introduce more greenspace?
The landscape proposal aims to transform the greenspace between Kings Road and Swain House into a small pocket park, featuring the addition of new trees within the existing soft landscape, as well as bulb planting and a mix of species-rich wildflowers. Furthermore, a new footpath will be introduced within the space, along with benches and litter bins, to enhance the attractiveness and usability of this green space.
Will the project result in any tree loss along the route?
The project team are considering all options along the route to minimise impact on trees and identify opportunities to enhance green spaces. We are committed to increasing tree cover, ensuring that for any tree removed, two will be planted in its place. We are also carrying out extensive efforts to assess where impact can be minimised and we will share the final details of this at the next stage of the project’s development.
Community and Economic Growth
How will this project benefit local businesses?
Improved transport options will make it easier for people to access local businesses, potentially increasing foot traffic and sales. The project also supports new housing developments, which can bring more customers to the area. We are continuing to work with local businesses to refine the details of the scheme to ensure that the works bring economic benefits to the local area.
What economic benefits are expected?
The project is expected to improve access to jobs, support local businesses, and make the area more attractive for investment, contributing to overall economic growth.
Public Consultation and Feedback
How can I provide my feedback on the project?
You can provide feedback on the planned works and contribute to the development of the final designs by attending public consultation events, participating in the online survey at www.yourvoice.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/kings-road-connect, writing to us at BFD Freepost (no stamp required), emailing us at kingsroad@future-bradford.co.uk(External link), or calling us on 0808 196 9119 (9am-5pm Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays). You can also request materials in alternative formats, including printed copies of materials, alternative languages, and braille.
When is the consultation taking place?
The consultation period starts on Monday 3 February 2025 at 9am and concludes on Sunday 16 March 2025 at 11.59pm.
Why is public feedback important?
Public feedback helps shape the final plans, ensuring the project meets the needs and preferences of the community.
How will my feedback be used?
All feedback will be reviewed and considered in the decision-making process to refine and improve the plans for the scheme. The outcomes of the consultation will be available on the Your Voice website.
Project Timeline and Construction
What stage is the project at?
In March 2024, the Strategic Outline Case (SOC), which is a key step in the process for getting a go-ahead for the works, was approved. We are now preparing for the next step of the planning and approval process, which involves further detailed analysis and refinement of the proposed way forward.
What are the next steps?
Following the public consultation between Monday 3 February 2025 to Sunday 16 March 2025, the feedback we receive from the public and key stakeholders will be collated and analysed. This will help to shape and refine the plans before they move to the next stage, which is the submission of an Outline Business Case (OBC).
When will construction work start and finish?
Main construction work is scheduled to start in Spring 2026 and be completed by Spring 2027. Enabling works will start before this, in Autumn 2025.
