Share your feedback on plans to improve transport options along Kings Road, Bradford, making travel easier for those who live on the route and travel through the area.

About the scheme

Kings Road is an important part of the Bradford district’s transport network. It connects communities such as Five Lane Ends, Swain House and Ashbourne, providing access to schools, shopping and amenities along the route and access to Bradford city centre via Canal RoadThe scheme is expected to cost around £35 million and, if approved, would be funded by the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) to transform this vital 2-mile route.

What is being proposed?

The Kings Road Connect scheme will help make bus travel more reliable and comfortable, and will make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more attractiveAs more people feel they can choose to leave the car at home, this will ease congestion, reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.

Proposed measures include:

  • New bus lanes and bus priority at key junctions to keep buses moving and improve journey times and service reliability, while keeping general traffic flowing.

  • Improvements to bus stops with new shelters, upgraded seating and real time information to help people travel with comfort and confidence.

  • New segregated cycle lanes for better connectivity to other cycle routes in the Bradford district, making cycling more attractive, reliable, and safer.

  • Widened pavements and new crossings for pedestrians, making walking and wheeling safer and more enjoyable.

  • Reduced speed limits from 40mph to 30mph to create a consistent speed along the route, improving traffic flow and road safety for all.

  • Formalised parking options along the route are currently being explored to replace informal parking and prioritise resident parking.

  • Improving public spaces by clearing vegetation to open unused footpaths and adding greenery to new areas created by road layout changesWe are committed to increasing tree cover, ensuring that for any tree removed, two will be planted in its place. Our goal is to achieve a minimum 10% Biodiversity Net Gain, maintaining and enhancing the area’s pleasant, leafy environment.

You can view the proposals in more detail by viewing our maps, linked below. These show precisely what measures are being proposed and where: https://www.yourvoice.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/39139/widgets/115414/documents/76792You can also see the current conditions and extent of the scheme in the youtube flythrough video at the bottom of this page.

Why are these changes being proposed?

An average of 14,000 vehicles per day use the route which adds up to congestion, delays, and frustration for all road users. However, poor infrastructure for walkingwheeling and cycling, and unreliable public transport means car travel often feels like the only way. This can isolate those who don’t have access to a vehicle, means those who need to drive a vehicle are stuck on congested roads, and discourages those who currently drive but want to walk, wheel, cycle or catch the bus from travelling this wayChanges are therefore needed to help improve the flow of traffic along the route and create a fairer route that helps everyone to get to where they need to go.
