Leeds Cycle Improvements – delivering the Leeds Cycling Vision

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s CityConnect programme is delivering improvements to cycling and walking infrastructure and routes across the region. Working in partnership with councils across West Yorkshire and York, we are aiming to enable and encourage more people to make more every day journeys by bike and on foot.

To deliver a wide range of transport improvements the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s CityConnect programme is seeking £12million funding through the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund, and the Leeds City Region Growth Deal – a £1billion package of Government investment through the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP), delivered by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region.

Connecting Leeds

Connecting Leeds is the long-term transport strategy for Leeds, aiming to improve all aspects of transport and travel in the city and connect people to the wider Leeds City Region. The goal is to create a people focussed, healthy city that is well connected and accessible to everyone. Improving public transport and walking and cycling facilities is key to increasing sustainable travel and improving air quality in the city.

Inspiring people to cycle more often is the vision of Leeds Cycling Ambition, which aims to ensure that Leeds is a vibrant and accessible city for cycling by as many people as possible.

South Leeds Cycle Improvements – Elland Road

Proposals for a cycle superhighway along Elland Road have been developed to provide communities around Holbeck and Beeston with a direct, traffic-free cycle route into the centres of employment and education located in and around Leeds city centre.

Proposed improvements include;

• new 3km segregated cycle superhighway between Elland Road Park and Ride and the city centre
• Improvements to pedestrian crossings and footways along the route
• New dedicated cycle crossings
• Upgrades to junctions to allow safe and direct cycle movements

These improvements aim to:

• Make travelling on foot and by bike a convenient and direct choice for travelling along this route
• Give people who live and work in and around Holbeck and Beeston a safe route to walk and cycle around their local area and into the city centre
• Extend the Leeds cycling network by building a route which connects to existing cycle and walking routes.

South Leeds Cycle Improvements – Dewsbury Road

Proposals to extend the existing segregated cycle route along Dewsbury Road have been developed to provide the communities around Beeston, Holbeck and Hunslet with a direct, traffic-free route between centres of employment and education.

Proposed improvements include:

• extending the existing segregated cycle route on Dewsbury Road with a 1.5km section of new route between Garnet Road and Beeston Ring Road.
• Improvements to pedestrian crossings and footways along the route
• New toucan crossing facilities
• Upgrades to junctions to allow safe and direct cycle movements

These improvements aim to:

• Make travelling on foot and by bike a convenient and direct choice for travelling along this route
• Complete a missing section of the Leeds cycle network, connecting people living in and around Beeston, Holbeck and Hunslet with the city centre
• Join up existing parts of the Leeds cycle network to create a continuous 4.4km segregated route for South Leeds, extending to the new Middleton Urban Bike Park.
