The information below was presented during the public consultation between October and November 2021:
Selby Station Gateway is North Yorkshire County Council and Selby District Council’s ambitious project to improve the area around Selby Railway Station. We want to show how your feedback from previous consultations have helped to shape the designs before a planning application is submitted.
Selby District Council, North Yorkshire County Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority are working together to deliver an exciting £23m worth of improvements which will benefit residents, business and visitors alike. Providing an accessible, attractive and cleaner alternative to car journeys is at the heart of Leeds City Region’s Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) - a major £317 million programme of transport infrastructure investment secured as part of the West Yorkshire devolution deal, plus local match funding. You can read more about the Leeds City Region TCF programme here.
In September 2019, and earlier in March 2021, we asked for your thoughts on our initial proposals for the railway station and surrounding area. At that time, you told us you wanted:
Designs to integrate with the town as a whole
Selby Park’s importance to be recognised and the park improved
More promotion of walking and cycling to/from Selby Station and around the local area
Parking to remain as many people still need to drive
The town’s history and heritage to be taken into account
High quality and low maintenance materials that improve the look and feel of Selby town centre
Improved safety, security and accessibility
Flood protection to be retained or improved
More trees and planting
Since then, we have worked to develop more detailed designs based on the feedback received during the consultation. We want to hear your views on these proposals before a planning application is submitted and the scheme can progress through to the delivery stage.

Other projects and policies affecting Selby town
Selby District Council and North Yorkshire County Council have a number of other projects around Selby town. We have recently consulted on the Selby Places & movement study which looked at traffic and public realm areas around the town centre – our Transforming Cities Fund proposals are a separate project but the designs are intended to be complimentary to any future scheme brought forward as a result of the Places and Movement work.
The Rail station is an important feature of the Transforming Cities Fund proposals and we are pleased that Network Rail are working on a separate, and complimentary scheme to install lifts at the station.

Next Steps
Following the close of the public consultation on 12 November, all feedback will be considered as the designs evolve. The designs will be finalised by the end of 2021 ahead of a final decision on implementation of the scheme. It is anticipated that construction of the scheme will begin in autumn 2022 for approximately 12 months. Following this consultation, detailed designs will be completed and a planning application will be submitted.
