This engagement has now closed, thank you for taking part.

The results are being analysed. The outcome report will be published on this page in due course.

We are working in partnership with Network Rail to improve access to platforms 16 and 17 at Leeds Rail Station. These proposals include increasing the length and width of platform 17 and moving the lift, stairs and escalators to a central position on platform 16.

We would like your feedback on these plans before progressing through detailed design and delivery in 2026-27.

Our proposals aim to:

  • Extend platform 17 length by at least 47% (143 metres)

Currently, platform 17 can accommodate two trains with up to two carriages each. This extension will allow trains with more than 50% further seats to use this platform.

  • Increase the width of the platform to 3.3 metres for most of the platform, with the last 17 metres at least 2.8 metres wide

This will help ease crowding on the platform and allow wheelchair access ramps to be more easily positioned when wheelchair users board or alight from a train at this platform.

  • Move the stairs, escalators and lift to a more central position on platform 16 to improve access and passenger flow through platforms 16 and 17.

Why do you have to lengthen platforms at great expense when 'selective door opening' could be used instead ?

    Thank you for your question.

To make room for longer trains on platform 17, we will first need to extend the track at the platform and move the points that connect platform 17 to the shared track. If we don't do this, the back of a train would often block the line into platform 16.

We also need to move the overhead lines and signalling equipment. It is this work which is the most expensive part of the project, not the lengthening of the platform itself. However, we do need to extend the platform to make sure wheelchair users can get on the train at the far end of the platform.

Thank you for your question. During the platform extension works, there is likely to be disruption to trains on platform 17. However, we don’t have the exact details of the disruption at this time. The project team is currently working with timetabling teams and evaluating how to carry out the work in a way that minimises the number of trains that will need to be relocated. Once details are available they will be communicated to passengers.

Thank you for your question regarding the extension to platform 17. The design for the new platform is still being developed and is subject to change. However, the current design does include an increase in the length of the platform canopy, extending from just over 21 metres to 80 metres. While this extended canopy won’t cover the entire platform, it will provide much more space for passengers to take shelter from the rain while on the platform.
