Thank you to all those who took part in the 'Halifax Railway Station' consultation. All survey answers, comments and suggestions are being considered in the next phase of designs, which will be subject to further public consultation.

Please find the Outcome Report, which summarises the results of the consultation and key themes in feedback received, available at the top of this webpage or by clicking the button below.

Round 2 of the consultation is live 23 November 2021- 16 January 2022: www.yourvoice.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/hrs

The information below was presented during the public consultation between 18 January - 14 February 2021.

Improvements to Halifax Railway Station (also referred to as Halifax Station Gateway).

Have your say on the transformational proposals to provide improvements to Halifax Railway Station.

Calderdale Council, in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, is working to provide improvements to Halifax Railway Station. The new facilities will include a new two-storey station building, a new town footbridge, improved walking and cycling connectivity and the reopening of an historic underpass beneath the station, allowing access to the eastern side of the station.

Halifax town centre has received significant recent investment, which has now been extended to the railway station and surrounding public space. Currently, the railway station does not provide a sense of arrival or a positive gateway to Halifax, the 2018 station user survey highlighted potential areas for improvement which this scheme is proposing to provide.

The proposed improvements are aligned with Leeds City Region and Calderdale Council strategic priorities, supporting economic development, regeneration and sustainable transportation across Calderdale and the city region.

Benefitting Halifax

  • Transformational change for the Halifax Railway Station area, town centre, and benefits to the wider local authority area.
  • An integrated and modern transport facility.
  • Better links to other modes of transport and better connection to Halifax town centre.
  • A new gateway to Halifax and the north, encouraging greater use of public transport, cycling and walking.
  • Greater inward economic investment from tourism.
  • A driver of growth, increasing the economic attractiveness of the town and enabling the aspirational job and economic growth targets set out by Calderdale Council.

Proposed Improvements include:

  • There will be an improved waiting lounge inside the station building at both ground and first floor level, providing passengers with a better view of the platforms outside. The new facilities will include real time journey information boards. Passengers can wait for trains on the platforms or in the improved waiting lounge facilities.
  • The new station building will include expanded retail options, new and improved toilets.
  • The new town footbridge will provide walking and cycling access to the new station building at first floor level. It will also provide direct and accessible connectivity between the town centre and the railway station including wayfinding and signage to guide visitors to key locations.
  • Existing station car parking will be relocated within the current Eureka! car park (northern car park) in front of the new station building at ground floor level. Spaces will be available for staff and station customers. There will be high quality parking spaces with accessible walkways, well defined bays, improved lighting, and CCTV. Provision will also be made for EV charging and wider bays to accommodate parent and child spaces as well as disabled user spaces.
  • The reopening of the underpass will improve access to the station, through the introduction of a step free route beneath the station. New lighting and CCTV will also be installed in the underpass.
  • Cyclists will benefit from better cycle storage facilities and improved connectivity to local cycle routes, including the Hebble Trail and A629.

This scheme is being delivered through the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) and West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund (WY+TF) programmes. The TCF is a major new programme of transport infrastructure investment aimed at providing a viable alternative to car journeys. Find out more information at www.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/TCF

No mention of the buildings on the current platform, are they all going?

RobinL asked almost 4 years ago

Hi there, The Halifax Station Gateway will be looking at potential congestion issues on the island platform, particularly around the stairs and waiting room area. There may be a requirement to remove some of the existing infrastructure on the platform to aid pedestrian movement, in particular the modern additions.  We will be seeking to reduce impact to any structures on the platforms that are Grade II listed as part of the original station building. As this is still under development it was not included within this public consultation.

We hope this is useful for you,
    Halifax Railway Station Consultation Team

The original station building appears to be ignored, why?

RobinL asked almost 4 years ago

Hi there, Thank you for this question. The incorporation of the original 1855 station building has previously been explored. However, due to its current use and potential impact on its historic fabric arising from conversion to current railway standards, it cannot be taken forward as part of the current proposals. This leaves the  original 1855 station building as an opportunity for future development to complement the station and locality. The proposals for the scheme have been developed to improve visual connectivity from the new station, new proposed footbridge connecting to the town centre and northern car park, to the original station building.

We hope this answers your question,

Hi there, Thank you for your question. The new bus stops shown on the consultation material are being delivered by the A629 Phase 2 scheme, and our proposals show how you would connect to these from the rail station via the proposed footbridge. The A629 scheme also includes creation of a largely one-way bus loop around the town centre. With the introduction of two new bus stops close to the station, making Alfred Street East and Horton Street the nearest bus connection points to the station. Re-routing of buses into the station car park would lead to increased bus journey times and potentially reduced reliability at certain times. We believe that on balance our proposals offer the best integration and interchange whilst not compromising bus services.

We hope that this answers your question,

Hi there,  Thank you for your question. Todmorden Rail Station was successful in obtaining funding from the Department for Transport’s ‘Access for All’ fund in 2019 as a result of a bid between Network Rail, Calderdale and WYCA with help from Todmorden Town Council. The start date for this work is currently towards the end of this year, though this could be impacted by ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. Current proposals are to provide lifts to both platforms, with some associated level access works in the station car park. Network Rail is also hoping to take advantage of the project by doing some renovation and waterproofing works on the subway and re-establish toilet facilities at the station, but this is subject to further confirmation and funding. Network Rail will deliver the works at Todmorden Rail Station.

We hope this answers your question,

How will rail users navigate between this proposed building and the existing station platform ?

michael bradley asked almost 4 years ago

Hi there,  Thank you for this question. There are 3 entrances and exits to the new station building, one at the western entrance of the (to be re-opened)  underpass, one at ground floor located near the taxi rank/pick-up point, and one at first floor level accessed via the new town centre footbridge. The platforms are accessed from first floor level, as station users do within the existing station building, and will cross to the platforms via the existing footbridge and stairs/lift down to platforms 1 and 2. If accessing the station from the underpass or ground floor entrance, users can access the first floor via lift or stairs within the new station building before proceeding via the existing footbridge to platforms 1 and 2. Clear signage will be provided throughout the station to aid accessibility.

We hope this answers your question,

Hi there, The station is being designed to be responsive to, and better reveal the character and appearance of, the original 1855 building though will be a modern structure to accommodate the needs and facilities required of railway stations today. The current proposals have been designed with input from heritage consultants, Historic England, the Civic Trust and the Calderdale Council Conservation Team. They have carefully considered the surviving heritage assets surrounding the existing station and how their setting might be enhanced.

We hope that this is useful for you,
