What is Future Mobility?

Where we want to go and how we want to travel is changing. Advances in technology, changes to how we work, and a shift in the way we access services and buy goods have all influenced how we travel.

Future Mobility looks at how innovation, technology and new ways of travelling can help to create a better, fairer, and greener transport system that meets our changing travel and transport needs.

This includes looking at new modes of transport, such as e-scooters, new public transport services, such as digital on-demand buses services, and new technology, such as driverless cars. It also considers new ways of accessing transport, for example through apps, and innovative ways of travelling to our town and city centres.

What is the Future Mobility Strategy?

West Yorkshire Combined Authority has been working with its partners alongside academics, transport operators and industry to explore how technology and innovation in transport can help the region meet its wider goals.

The West Yorkshire Future Mobility Strategy is the result of this work and sets out how new forms of transport and services can help us to build a more prosperous region, improve people’s quality of life, and reduce carbon emissions.

The Strategy will also set out the principles and priorities for our work on Future Mobility over the next 10 years, and inform our funding and investment decisions to ensure we make the best choices for the region to have a better, fairer, and greener transport system.

The objectives of the Future Mobility Strategy are to:

  • Support and enable inclusive growth
  • Contribute towards our ambition of becoming zero carbon by 2038 and help to tack the Climate Emergency
  • Help us achieve our targets to increase use of bus, rail, walking and cycling whilst reducing car use.
  • Help to better plan and manage our transport networks to transform the affordability, ease and experience of the people using it
  • Contribute towards the region’s recovery from the COVID-19 crisis

Have your say:

Between 21st August 2020 and 18 September 2020, we are asking for your feedback on the West Yorkshire Future Mobility Strategy. Your views will help shape the strategy to ensure we get the best outcomes for West Yorkshire.

Tell us what you think by completing our short survey.

Next steps:

Following the close of consultation on 18 September 2020, all feedback will be considered and used to shape the final version of the strategy. The strategy will be submitted to the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee in Autumn 2020 for approval.

Once approved, the strategy will set the priorities for our work on Future Mobility over the next 10 years. The strategy will allow us to develop, test and evaluate new services and inform our funding and investment decisions to ensure we make the right choices for the region to create a better, fairer, and greener transport system.
