Castleford Greenway - Methley Junction link to NCN Route 67
Background
The West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s CityConnect programme is delivering improvements to cycling and walking infrastructure and routes across the region.
Working in partnership with councils across West Yorkshire and York, we are aiming to improve and encourage more people to make more every day journeys by bike or on foot.
To deliver a wide range of transport improvements the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s CityConnect programme is seeking £12 m funding through the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund, and the Leeds City Region Growth Deal - a £1 billion package of Government investment through the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP), delivered by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region.
Greenway Development around Castleford
The West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Wakefield Council have been working in partnership to create a network of greenways around the Castleford area, which will create a 16km route by providing missing links in existing infrastructure.
Castleford to Wakefield Greenway
The first phase of this project, the completion of a 2km missing link of a 2 km stretch between Fairies Hill Lock and Methley Bridge in Castleford, was completed in March 2018.
The next phase of this project is currently being delivered in partnership with Sustrans, the UK’s cycling and walking charity, and will create a traffic-free route across the River Calder linking the communities of Castleford and Methley. This project has seen the creation of a new bridge for people travelling by bike or on foot across the Hallam Line. This phase of works is due to be complete in spring 2020.
Castleford Greenway – Methley Junction link to NCN Route 67
The next phase of the Castleford Greenway will be a 1.3 km stretch of traffic free route and will link the existing National Cycle Network route 67 with Methley Junction.
- The new stretch of route will be a 3 m wide shared use path for people travelling by bike or on foot.
- The route will make use of the old Methley Railway line. It will connect the new Castleford to Wakefield Greenway by the River Calder with the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Network to Bottom Boat, providing a key missing link for Leeds and Wakefield.
- Following public engagement earlier this year and subsequent discussions between partners, the original plan to signalise and narrow the A639 and widen the pavements has been removed from this project.
