A64 Bus Priority Improvements - second stage engagement

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback to this engagement, this engagement is now closed and the responses are now being analysed. The outcome report will be published on this page in due course.

In the summer of 2021 you gave us feedback on our A64 Route Improvement Scheme. Since then, we have worked with Leeds City Council to develop our proposals to improve walking, cycling, and taking the bus along the A64. Now, we want to hear your views.

After our first consultation, we decided to make some changes to the proposals of the A64 Corridor Bus Priority scheme. These changes would run from the A64 junction with Marsh Lane on the edge of the city centre to Whinmoor.

This route is very busy with traffic, and over 30 buses an hour travel along the road. Congestion is a problem at peak travel times. This congestion causes buses to be delayed, meaning that your bus journey times are longer and buses in the area are less reliable. It's likely that this congestion will get worse over time, with more people travelling along the route because of planned developments such as the East Leeds Extension.

The A64 Route Improvement Scheme will help to improve delays along the route by adding bus priority at key road junctions and improving access for people walking and cycling. We hope this will mean that you can commute to work more easily, and that the A64 is safer for everyone using it. Also, these improvements will help Leeds City Council to reach its goals of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Our proposals aim to:

  • improve bus journey reliability and reduce journey times;

  • improve accessibility for bus users and safety along the route for cyclists and pedestrians;

  • reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality and;

  • help achieve Leeds City Council’s commitment to net-zero carbon by 2030.

The proposals

To help develop the scheme, we conducted an assessment of the route to identify key problems and opportunities. We consulted on an initial set of proposals in 2021 and then further developed these using consultation feedback. We are now asking for feedback on our updated proposals for new bus priority measures and improvements between Marsh Lane and Baildon Drive, Whinmoor.

Our proposals will improve access for residents and contribute towards environmental objectives by reducing traffic congestion.

  • Extension of the inbound bus lane between Upper Accommodation Road and Raincliffe Road

  • Traffic Signal junction upgrades at Selby Road, Killingbeck Drive, Cross Gates Road and Seacroft Avenue

  • New inbound bus lane from Inglewood Drive to Cross Gates Road

  • New signalised junction (including new pedestrian and cycle crossings) at Old York Road and Inglewood Drive

  • Reconfiguration of Seacroft Avenue to create a right turn for buses only onto York Road

  • New inbound bus lane on approach to the Outer Ring Road

  • New real time information at certain bus stops along the route.

The scheme is funded by the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund (TCF), a major programme of transport infrastructure investment. TCF aims to help create a positive change in the way we travel across the region, providing an accessible, attractive, and cleaner alternative to car journeys.
