Our consultation on the police budget in West Yorkshire

The Mayor is responsible for setting the annual budget for West Yorkshire Police. This includes agreeing the local police precept - the part of the council tax that helps to fund local policing.

We want to hear your views on the Mayor’s plan for police funding next year (2025-26).

The Government has announced that a precept equivalent to an annual £14 increase on Band D households can be set. Despite using reserves, not filling staff vacancies, and the efficiency programme, West Yorkshire Police are currently facing a funding gap of £17.4 million which is putting severe pressure on the budget. The precept would help West Yorkshire Police reduce this deficit to around £14.5 million, putting us closer to a financial position which will maintain the police service we need to keep our communities safe, just and inclusive.

Please give us your feedback on police funding next year by filling out our survey here. Please note that this online survey will close on Friday 17 January 2025.
