What area does the Kilnhurst Weir engagement cover?

    The Weir is located between Key Sike Lane and Woodhouse Road approximately half a mile east of Todmorden Town Centre, the nearest highway is Commercial Street.

    Who is responsible for delivering the scheme?

    Calderdale Council is responsible for delivering the scheme. 

    Calderdale Council is working in partnership with the Canal and River Trust. 

    West Yorkshire Combined Authority's involvement is through technical expertise and support on the engagement process.

    What works has already taken place at Kilnhurst Weir?

    Slight changes were made to the weir following floods around 2005 we believe. There is no record with Canal & River Trust, formally British Waterways on record.

    What are the main aims and objectives of this scheme?

    The objectives of this scheme are to:

    • To identify options for inclusive use and maintain heritage of the Rochdale Canal
    • Improve the offer of the Rochdale Canal for all users.

    What will the improvements provide?

    The main aims of the scheme is to:

    • To fully understand the unique environment and all attributes of Kilnhurst Weir
    • A more accessible canal towpath for walking, cycling and sustainable modes.

    Are improvements likely to be made to the other Weirs?

    Each weir is unique and based on land ownership and footprint of the weir. Each weir would be considered case by case.

    How will the scheme benefit local residents and businesses?

    Local residents and businesses will benefit from an increased length of inclusive towpath creating approximately 1 mile of sustainable network east of Todmorden Town Centre.

    How will this scheme benefit the users of the towpath?

    Improvements could be made to help aid walkers, cyclists and a variety of sustainable modes that are eligible to use the canal towpath.

    Calderdale Council welcome opinions and feedback from anyone. Whether you walk, cycle, are a business owner, local resident or just travel through the area. Your views and insight are valuable and will help shape the scheme.

     Calderdale Council are keen to hear from everyone from towpath users, local residents, businesses and commuters.

     We are encouraging people to register on www.yourvoice.westyorks-ca.gov.uk to be kept involved and informed about the outcome of the engagement.

    • Kilnhurst Weir, Key Sike Lane Tuesday 7 March 10am to 1pm.

    What will you do with the feedback received during the engagement period?

    Your feedback is important. Calderdale Council need to demonstrate that we have taken onboard feedback as part of the on-going development of the wider scheme.

     The feedback provided as part of this engagement will be taken into consideration for future improvements work subject to additional funding availability.
