Horsefair Streets for People

Wakefield Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority ‘streets for people’ scheme aims to help create safe and healthy street environments, which work well for all people and help them live active, healthy lives in areas of good air quality. The scheme will reconnect Pontefract town centre with the castle and make it easier for people to walk, cycle and use public transport.

The project will cost £2.5million and is being funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority through its Streets for People (£1m) and Wakefield Council (£1.5m) funds.

In October 2019 we gave people the opportunity to tell us about how they live, work and visit the area, what is important to them, and how they would like the road between the castle and the town centre ‘Horsefair’ to be made better. This information has now been reviewed and aided the development of the final designs.

The plans will also be on display at Pontefract Library and Aspire@ThePark

Please find below information on the public consultation which ran 10 - 25 October 2019:

The scheme

The ‘streets for people’ scheme is funded by the West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan and aims to help create safe and healthy street environments, which work well for all people and help them live active, healthy lives in areas of good air quality.

Around £1 million from this scheme has been allocated to Pontefract to improve the area around Horsefair and develop connectivity between the Town Centre and Pontefract Castle. This includes enhancements to pedestrian accessibility, enrichment to the on-street environment and changes to traffic movement.

Engagement

We believe that the local people living and working in Pontefract know it best. Throughout October 2019 we gave people the opportunity to tell us about how you live, work and visit the area; what is important to you, and how you would like the road between the castle and the town centre ‘Horsefair’ to be made better. This page will be updated as more information on the future of this scheme becomes updated.

Next steps and consultations

A further two rounds of consultation have been delivered and promoted by Wakefield Council for this project.

In February 2020 a full consultation was undertaken and people were spilt between two proposed designs, and a hybrid option was developed.

A third and final round of consultation was on the hybrid proposal from the 28 February to 14 March 2022 on retaining a reduced level of on-street parking and making the street less car dominated. Respondent comments were considered and reflected the preferred option via the Wakefield Council produced 'You Said, We Did' (which can be found in the documents section).

For the most up to date information on the project please visit the Wakefield Council website https://www.wakefield.gov.uk/regeneration/the-towns/pontefract/the-pontefract-masterplan/.
