The following information was presented during public engagement 4 March - 5 April 2019
Kirklees Council is developing proposals for road improvements in Holmfirth Town Centre. Local roads in the town need to cope with the amount of traffic using them. Delay and congestion has become a common sight; in particular, the junction at Victoria Street and the A6024. Kirklees Council, in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, is developing proposals for improvements to ease this congestion.
As part of this work we are now sharing our ideas with you and asking for your comments and feedback. We will use this, along with the results of our ongoing assessments, to finalise our plans.
Holmfirth Town Centre
The unique area of Holmfirth provides many challenges to making major alterations to the roads, but the impact of congestion means something must be done.
West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund
This project has received funding through the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund and the Leeds City Region Growth Deal - a £1 billion package of Government investment through the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP), delivered by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region.
Junction improvements and link road
A significant amount of work has already gone into assessing the road use and layout in Holmfirth town centre, although no decision has been made, roads have been identified for junction improvements. We hope that by making improvements at key junctions and by providing a link road we can:
- Create a more attractive environment for residents, businesses and visitors
- Ease traffic congestion in Holmfirth
- Improve efficient and journey time reliability for all road users
- Create better access for local residents, workers and business owners
Preferred option
To better understand the situation, we have undertaken investigations and traffic simulations to find where the issues and journey time delays are. Using this information we have developed a series of options and tested them, which has led us to a preferred road improvement option. You can view the options development in the images and documents section of this webpage, including the preferred and discounted options.
The options we have looked at included:
- do nothing, leaving the roads as they are;
- low cost intervention, what would be possible with just the Council's money;
- medium cost intervention - our preferred option;
- high cost intervention, a scheme if money or land was not restricted.
Our preferred option proposal includes:
- Building a new link road between Hollowgate and the A6024, Huddersfield Road
- Changing Victoria Street to one-way in order to reduce traffic flow
- Removing parking bays on Victoria Street to widen footpaths
- Providing two loading bays, and three disabled parking bays on Victoria Street
- Changing a section of Hollowgate to one-way traffic flow
- Banning the right turn from Hollowgate bridge onto the A6024, Huddersfield Road
- Modifying and changing the junction at Victoria Square into a mini roundabout junction
- Upgrading the existing zebra crossings on Victoria Street and Town Gate
- Landscaping, new trees and planting
- Replacing the carriageway, paving, lighting, signs and road markings
