The West Yorkshire Combined Authority, in partnership with Kirklees Council, is excited to share the updated £13.9 million plan to transform Dewsbury Bus Station. The plans included an improved interior design, better accessibility for all bus station users and upgraded public entrances and exits.

In 2021 we asked for your feedback on the initial proposals for the bus station. Thank you to all those who contributed and shared their views.
Following the first stage of engagement, we have made some changes to the proposals. We are now seeking further feedback from you on the updated detailed designs.
This engagement runs from Thursday 22 June to Wednesday 2 August 2023.

Join a drop-in event
We'll be in Dewsbury to talk to anyone interested about the transformation plans for the bus station. You'll be able to take a closer look at the plans and share your feedback with the project team. Paper surveys will be available to take home and submit via Freepost.

The scheme aims
Dewsbury bus station is a key transport hub and enables both local travel in the town and long-distance travel from the wider region. The plans to transform the station aim to:
- Encourage more people to visit Dewsbury bus station
- Transform passenger facilities
- Improve access and safety for all bus station passengers
- Attract new retail business and improve people's experience
- Help regenerate Dewsbury Town Centre in line with the Dewsbury Blueprint
- Make the bus station more energy efficient and reduce carbon emissions
The proposals
Following the first stage of engagement, we have made some changes to the proposals and are seeking further feedback on:
- New safety and security features, including additional CCTV cameras in an improved layout and help points
- A new customer service desk on the concourse
- Improved seating and waiting facilities
- New bus and rail real time information and improved bus stand design
- Additional accessibility improvements, including:
- A new wayfinding line to assist people with visual impairments
- New smart timetable information at each stand, with braille and audio information
- A Changing Places toilet which has extra features to meet the needs of people with a range of disabilities and their carer's. The toilets provide enough space and the right equipment, including a hoist and height adjustable changing bench
- A new 'quiet room', for those who need to get away from the busier areas of the bus station. This can be particularly useful for people with neurodivergence, people with disabilities and anyone in need of a moment of quiet
- Increased levels of natural lighting from the new windows and new part-glazed atrium roof
Some other key features of the plans include:
- An improved exterior with new cladding, planting and landscaping
- New modernised shop units
- Improved internal features including entrances, flooring and signage
- A “living roof” with bee-friendly plants and new solar panels
- New bus layover bays to increase bus station capacity

Improvements in Dewsbury Town Centre
The Dewsbury Bus Station proposals are part of a wider package to transform the way people travel in and around the town, including better walking and cycling access between the station and the town centre. In 2021 and 2022 a consultation was carried out on the proposals for Dewsbury Town Centre.
Transforming Cities Fund
The scheme is delivered through the Combined Authority’s Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme, which is aimed at making it easier for people to walk, cycle and use public transport. You can find out more in our TCF FAQs.
