Dewsbury Town Centre Walking and Cycling Improvements

Kirklees Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority are proposing a series of travel improvements in Dewsbury town centre.
The ‘Dewsbury Town Centre Walking & Cycling Improvements’ project is part of the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme, which aims to help create a positive change in the way we travel across the region, providing an accessible, attractive, and cleaner alternative to car journeys. Background
This project aims to encourage more people to walk, cycle and use public transport in Dewsbury and will help people make full use of the new planned investments at Dewsbury Bus Station and the Transpennine Rail route.
This project will also support the delivery of the ‘Dewsbury Blueprint’, which is a 10-year plan that seeks to regenerate the town and provide for future growth in the area. This project also aims to support the Strategic Development Framework and the Kirklees Local Plan.
The town is in the middle of an ambitious period of investment and regeneration that has already seen major successes, including the new Rail Station Forecourt and securing a £25m Town Deal. Dewsbury sits at the heart of the North Kirklees Growth Zone, a long-term regeneration initiative that will promote transformational change in areas such as housing, enterprise and education, among others.

Our aims
This scheme aims to support all of the above regeneration plans in the following ways:
- Making it easier and safer for everyone to get to Dewsbury Bus and Rail stations on foot and by bike
- Encouraging businesses to move into the area and help regeneration and growth, by making it an attractive place to work (check out the Town Investment Plan)
- Making it easier and safer for more people to walk, cycle and use the bus in this area
- Supporting people to get to places of education and employment with low-cost travel choices
- Improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions from vehicles
Our proposals
- New cycle lanes – including contra-flow cycle lanes (cycle lanes that allow cycles to travel in the opposite direction to the vehicles)
- Widen footways
- Upgrade pedestrian crossings and more space for pedestrians at major junctions across the ring road
- New footways and cycle tracks
- Traffic calming measures plus other measures to create a better public space
- New landscaping areas and trees
Here is the list of the roads included in the proposals, with a brief outline of the changes that could be made in each area:
- Bradford Road/ Halifax Road/ Ring Road Junctions – improved pedestrian and cycling crossings, footway improvements and one-way segregated cycle lanes
- Dewsbury Ring Road between Bradford Road and Leeds Road Junctions – two-way segregated cycle lane and footway upgrades
- Aldams Road near the Bus Station – improved pedestrian and cycling crossings, footway and cycle lane improvements
- South Street – crossing upgrades, footway improvements, pedestrian safety and landscaping
- Bond Street – footway widening and landscaping
- Grove Street – footway and parking improvements
- Wellington Street – new crossings and a contraflow cycle lane (cycle lanes that allow cycles to travel in the opposite direction to motor vehicles)
- Church Street – footway improvements, landscaping and segregated cycle lane
- Longcauseway South – two-way segregated cycle lane, pedestrian crossing, traffic calming and one-way measures
- Railway Street – improve pedestrian safety at crossings by reducing the width of the crossing points
The proposals were open to public consultation from Thursday 7 October to Sunday 7 November 2021.

Next steps
We will use your feedback gathered through this public consultation to develop the next stage in the design of our proposals.
Exciting changes ahead for Dewsbury
Not only are these walking and cycling improvements being proposed, but there are also several other investment schemes in the town. The following all have inter-linked transport and highways elements:
- Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) – including this project, with upgraded walking and cycling routes
- West Yorkshire Transport Fund – Mirfield-Dewsbury-Leeds Corridor project
- TCF work already successfully completed – links to, and facilities at, Dewsbury Rail Station
- Active Travel Fund – funds part of the linkage between Calder Greenway and the Rail Station
- Dewsbury ‘Town Fund’ – regeneration projects including highway access schemes
- Kirklees Council Capital – regeneration projects and highway infrastructure schemes.
These projects and programmes are being developed on various timeframes and there is some overlap between the proposed schemes in each. The Mirfield-Dewsbury-Leeds project was put out to public consultation in summer 2020 and included proposals for some streets that have now been brought into the Dewsbury Town Centre Walking & Cycling Transforming Cities Fund project. These streets include:
- Bond Street
- Wellington Street
- Grove Street
- Church Street/ Westgate
- Railway Street/ Longcauseway South
Each of these schemes received a majority support and constructive comments in the consultation exercise in 2020, however updated design proposals are now being re-consulted on as part of this TCF scheme.
The Dewsbury Town Centre Walking & Cycling TCF project also brings in some new proposals for the following streets and junctions:
- South Street
- Aldams Road/ Wilton Street Junction
- Halifax Road/ Bradford Road/ Ring Road Junctions
- Ring Road between Bradford Road and Leeds Road Junctions
Later in the year, a further public consultation on modified sections of the Mirfield-Dewsbury-Leeds corridor project will also take place.
A wider implementation plan for Dewsbury town centre for the period 2022–2024 will be put together that brings together promoted schemes across the various funding programmes. Communications will be made on the outcomes of the consultation and implementation plans in due course.
